DESIGNER QUANTUM MATERIALS
An electron spin can be regarded as the smallest non-trivial unit from which arbitrarily complex quantum systems can be constructed. For example, a dimerized Heisenberg spin chain with a movable 'kink' can be used as a 'spin wire' to transport spin-based quantum information. The 21-spin system shown above is closed, but in principle this method can be used to transport 'flying' spin qubits over large distances.
