THz FERROELECTRIC
FIELD EFFECT

Electron spin exchange can be controlled with electric fields. Depicted above is a scheme in which two electrons, localized on adjacent Ge quantum dots, have their exchange coupling modulated at THz frequencies by an epitaxial ferroelectric. The polarization from the ferrroelectric is modulated at THz frequencies using ultrafast optical sources. Recent experiments performed in collaboration with Hrvoje Petek have demonstrated more than 15 THz of bandwidth for this ferroelectric field effect in silicon.
